The Green Inferno isn't a film for casual horror viewers and it doesn't pretend to be. Roth's engagement with the cannibal exploitation tradition is real and his argument about activist hypocrisy gives the film a satirical spine that distinguishes it from pure shock content. Synopsis
Roth's cannibal film follows two Americans who join a suspected tribe and find that the western tourists are as culpable as anything the indigenous community is accused of. The film sits explicitly in the tradition of Italian cannibal exploitation cinema and makes a pointed argument about what those films were doing. Difficult viewing that earns its difficulty.
