Why it’s HorroRated
Hostel is smarter than its detractors allow. The first act functions as a character study in entitlement that makes the suffering that follows feel earned rather than gratuitous. The reversal in the third act complicates the film's morality in interesting ways. Hostel started a real conversation about exploitation cinema and what we're watching when we watch horror.
Synopsis
Paxton, Josh, and Oli follow the tip through Amsterdam and find that everything promised is accurate up to a certain point. Roth builds the first act as a specific portrait of entitlement that makes the reversal feel earned rather than gratuitous. The film generated significant debate about what it was doing, which is at minimum a sign that it was doing something.
