Why it’s HorroRated
The infrared dot grid that fills the Nelsons' darkened living room is a genuinely clever scare machine, and the best moments come from watching those glowing specks shift around something you can't see. Kathryn Newton and Matt Shively have an easy, funny chemistry that keeps the long stretches of video chat watchable. Beyond that, the formula is showing its age: the jolts arrive on schedule and the mythology gets nudged forward rather than explained. Completists following Katie's story will want it, as will anyone curious how the series put early-2010s home tech to work.
Synopsis
Katie and young Hunter have been missing for five years when Paranormal Activity 4 (2012) picks up in a Nevada subdivision, where teenager Alex Nelson grows uneasy about the strange boy her family takes in while his mother is in the hospital. Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, who directed the third film, return with Christopher Landon writing, and Kathryn Newton stars alongside Matt Shively and series regular Katie Featherston. Webcam chats and a game console's infrared motion sensor replace the earlier films' camcorders.
