Paranormal Activity 3 is the best of the sequels primarily because the oscillating fan camera rig is the most inventive formal solution the series produced. Going back to 1988 and establishing what happened in that house gives the mythology actual roots. A prequel that genuinely adds something.
Synopsis
Paranormal Activity 3 goes back to 1988 and the childhood of the women from the previous films, establishing what they experienced in that house and who was watching them. The 1980s home video format is a useful formal constraint and the oscillating fan camera rig is the series' most inventive technical solution. A prequel that genuinely adds to the mythology.
