Why it’s HorroRated
Here the monster is the underdog, and that flip becomes the film's biggest strength. Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi gives Dek real pride and pain beneath all the makeup and effects, and Elle Fanning is a delight as Thia, chatty, curious and impossible to rattle even with half her body missing. Genna is a gloriously hostile playground of grabbing plants and armored beasts, and Trachtenberg shoots its fights with the same clarity he brought to Prey. The PG-13 rating means it plays more as adventure than horror, so expect thrills and laughs rather than real fear. As a fresh angle on a nearly forty-year-old creature, it lands beautifully.
Synopsis
For once a Predator is the hero: Predator: Badlands (2025) follows Dek (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi), the runt of his Yautja clan, who sets out to kill the seemingly unkillable Kalisk on the planet Genna and earn his place. Dan Trachtenberg directed from Patrick Aison's screenplay, and Elle Fanning plays Thia, a Weyland-Yutani android who becomes his guide, along with her synthetic sister Tessa. The PG-13 adventure leans into strange alien wildlife, odd-couple humor and a corporate link to the Alien films.
