Shane Black's fingerprints are all over this one: rapid-fire banter, a misfit crew you could happily watch bicker for two hours, and violence played with a wink. Trevante Rhodes and Keegan-Michael Key give the so-called Loonies real charm, and the opening crash and lab escape are brisk, bloody fun. The back half was reworked late in production and it shows, with story threads piling up faster than the film can tie them off and a tone that sometimes tips from horror into pure comedy. Go in expecting a rowdy, gory action romp with a horror skeleton rather than a scary creature feature.
Synopsis
Shane Black, who had a small role in the 1987 original, returned to direct The Predator (2018), sharing writing duties with Fred Dekker on a story set between Predator 2 and Predators. Boyd Holbrook stars as Quinn McKenna, a Ranger sniper who joins a busload of traumatized veterans and Olivia Munn's evolutionary biologist once a crashed ship brings the hunters back, while Jacob Tremblay plays his son Rory and Sterling K. Brown a government agent with plans of his own. Expect wisecracks, splattery kills and a whole lot of firepower.
