Why it’s HorroRated
Swapping the jungle for a sweltering city was a bold call, and it gives this sequel a personality all its own. Danny Glover plays Harrigan as a cop too stubborn to know when he's outgunned, Bill Paxton and Gary Busey chew happily through their scenes, and the subway car sequence is a genuine stunner. The gang-war plotting is noisy and some of its early-'90s attitudes have aged badly, but the film keeps widening the hunter's world with new weapons, new rules and plenty of grisly trophy taking. Come for a grimy, overheated companion piece that takes real swings.
Synopsis
The hunt shifts to a sweltering, gang-torn Los Angeles in 1997 for Predator 2 (1990), set a decade after the first film, as Danny Glover's LAPD lieutenant Mike Harrigan crosses paths with the alien and with the federal agents quietly tracking it. Stephen Hopkins took over as director, writers Jim and John Thomas came back, and Kevin Peter Hall again plays the creature opposite Gary Busey, María Conchita Alonso, Rubén Blades, Bill Paxton and Robert Davi. Jungle survival gives way to a loud, sweaty cop thriller full of rooftop chases, a crowded subway car and a meat locker ambush.
