Why it’s HorroRated
Alfred Hitchcock Presents is the foundation of prestige horror anthology television and the template that every series in the format since has been measured against. Hitchcock's sardonic introductions are legendary for good reason, but what distinguished the show was the quality of the writing and the moral intelligence underneath the surface entertainment. It understood that the best horror is the kind where you can see yourself in the guilty party. Essential television.
Synopsis
Hitchcock hosted each episode with a dry introductory segment that often contradicted the apparent moral of the story that followed, which was the whole joke and the whole point. Adaptations of Roald Dahl, John Collier, and other literary suspense writers sit alongside original teleplays, with Robert Altman and Norman Lloyd among the directors. The episodes clock in around twenty-five minutes and almost always land.
