Tales from the Crypt is a classic and it earned that status completely. The HBO budget gave it room to bring in real talent both in front of and behind the camera and the practical effects work throughout the series is some of the best the decade produced. The Crypt Keeper is one of horror television's great hosts, every pun included. It understands the EC Comics DNA perfectly: bad people deserve what they get and what they get is usually spectacular. Essential horror television.
Synopsis
HBO's budget gave the Crypt Keeper's anthology access to real talent in front of and behind the camera and the show used that access well across all seven seasons. Each episode adapts a story from the EC Comics catalog into a morality tale where bad people receive exactly the punishment their behavior warrants. The practical effects are outstanding, the cast is stacked with recognizable faces, and the tone balances horror and dark comedy with practiced ease.
