Scream Queens is Ryan Murphy at his most deliberately campy, a slasher whodunit that prioritizes skewering collegiate social hierarchies over delivering genuine scares. Emma Roberts and Jamie Lee Curtis are both perfectly calibrated to the show's register and the murders are creative enough to hold attention even when the comedy carries most of the weight. Not trying to frighten you, not pretending otherwise, and at the specific thing it is actually going for it mostly succeeds.
Synopsis
Dean Munsch threatens to shut down Kappa Kappa Tau following a rash of murders on campus unless the sorority president Chanel Oberlin can solve them first. Ryan Murphy populates the show with recognizable archetypes and then systematically dismantles them through the season. The whodunit structure holds up and the cast commits to the absurdity completely.
