Santa Clarita Diet earns both halves of its horror comedy designation by centering the premise on a marriage rather than on the horror itself. Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant have genuine chemistry and the comedy comes from watching two fundamentally decent people try to maintain their suburban life while managing increasingly impossible logistics. It's funny, it's gross, and it's warmer than it has any right to be. Cancelled after three seasons and still missed.
Synopsis
Sheila Hammond dies unexpectedly and returns as something that requires fresh human meat to function. Her husband Joel decides this is simply a new challenge in their marriage and the two of them work together to manage the logistics while maintaining their real estate careers in the Santa Clarita suburbs. Victor Fresco writes the show as a genuine dark comedy where the horror elements are played for real rather than camped up.
