The Horror of Dolores Roach is a dark comedy horror series that delivers on both counts. Justina Machado is exceptional in the lead role and the show uses the gentrification of Washington Heights as both a setting and an actual subject in a way most genre TV doesn't bother with. The tonal balance between funny and disturbing is handled with real confidence and the premise goes to places you won't see coming. A very strong recommendation.
Synopsis
Loosely inspired by the legend of Sweeney Todd and transplanted to contemporary Washington Heights, Dolores returns from an unjust prison sentence to find her neighborhood transformed beyond recognition. She takes up residence in the basement of her old friend Luis's empanada shop and begins working as a masseuse. When her stability is threatened again, her decisions escalate in ways neither she nor Luis fully anticipated.
