The 2023 Goosebumps series is a smarter and more ambitious take on the source material than you'd expect. Weaving the Stine monster catalog into a single overarching mystery gives it a coherence the original anthology format couldn't have and the scares don't condescend to their audience. It's accessible enough for younger viewers and interesting enough for adults who grew up with the books. A solid and fun horror series that does more than the premise required.
Synopsis
Rather than an anthology, this 2023 reimagining is a serialized mystery. Kids from different social groups are brought together by the mysterious death of Harold Biddle and find that secrets their own parents have been hiding for thirty years are tangled up in the Stine monster universe. Scares, humor, and real character work are balanced well across the run.
