Why it’s HorroRated
Them is a horror anthology that uses the genre to examine racial terror in mid-century America with a specificity and honesty that most horror television avoids. The first season in particular is relentless in how it layers supernatural horror on top of the very real violence the Emory family faces from their neighbors. Deborah Ayorinde's performance as Lucky Emory is one of the best in recent horror television. A difficult watch that earns its difficulty completely.
Synopsis
The Emorys relocate from North Carolina to an all-white neighborhood in Compton, California in 1953 and find that the community's hostility toward their presence is matched by something malevolent in the house they've moved into. Little Marvin uses the anthology format to explore terror across different American eras. Season one is a relentless and formally precise piece of social horror that operates on multiple levels simultaneously.
