The Last Exorcism earns its found footage format by building an interesting documentary subject in Cotton Marcus before the horror even arrives. The ambiguity about what's actually happening to Nell is maintained with real care and the final sequence is disturbing. One of the better possession films of its era.
Synopsis
Cotton can perform a convincing exorcism and has agreed to expose the theatrical mechanics of the ritual on camera. The confidence of the debunking approach is the film's primary dramatic engine. A found footage film that uses the format's intimacy to make the ambiguity about what's actually happening feel genuinely troubling.
