The Haunting of Bly Manor is a different kind of horror than Hill House and it takes a little longer to reveal what it actually is: a ghost story about love and loss more than about dread. Flanagan adapts Henry James's The Turn of the Screw and other James stories into something quietly devastating and the final episodes land hard. It's less scary than its predecessor and more melancholy, but it commits to that register completely and Victoria Pedretti is excellent throughout.
Synopsis
Dani Clayton takes the job at Bly Manor and finds the property filled with history and presences she can't fully account for. The more she learns about the estate's past, the more entangled she becomes in something she can't easily leave. Flanagan adapts Henry James's ghost stories into a meditation on memory, love, and the particular way grief can trap a person in place.
